My Story

Hi my name is Joel Daly and all my life I have been the skinny one.

Growing up playing football and going to school my weight was always something people pointed out to me.

I have always found it incredibly hard to put weight on, and at a point I just accepted this will always be the case for me.

When I was in primary school, I was so small and I just wanted to be taller, and then I finally got my wish.

When I got into my 2nd year of secondary school I hit my growth spurt…

But with this growth spurt came a whole new problem.

I was incredibly slim, at one point I was about 5ft 8 and I weighed just over 45kg. A strong gust of wind would have knocked me over.

I remember the first time I realised just how skinny I was…

It was just after I had shattered my wrist in school.

After 3 months of multiple casts & physio work I was cleared to go back to play football but when I went back I was even skinnier than before.

It is the typical story of how most guys get into the gym.

A young man who doesn’t like the way he looks going to gym to try and change that.

But, the problem I had, was I had no idea what I was doing.

I was going into the gym, and typing up ‘workout plans’ into YouTube and trying my best to follow the plan religiously.

After 3 months I saw absolutely 0 results and this was for many reasons…

  • I had no clue how to do the exercises right.

  • I did not know what foods to eat (besides the bodybuilder classic…Chicken & Rice)

  • I had no-one to guide me on how to get started.

My journey in the gym continued like this for the next few years.

I kept at it and was learning more and more everyday.

Then I started to see progress, but then covid happened, the gyms closed down, and I was thrown right back to where I started.

For the next 15 months, the gyms open and closed every couple of weeks so it was extremely hard to get any sort of momentum built up, and I made minimal progress.

I was so disheartened because whatever muscle I had built up over the last number of years was gone.

I had been so consistent with my training for years and I didn’t even look like I went to the gym.

I had accepted that my genes are not built for this and I was just going to be like this forever, and I would just learn to live with it.

Then one day something just clicked and I thought to myself,

“You really haven’t been trying have you?”

In the autumn of 2022 for the first time, I was honest with myself.

I decided that I was not going to accept the reality that I believed for myself.

I simply refused!

I decided that I was sick of looking at myself in the mirror and feeling shame, so from that day forward I knew…

I wasn’t messing around with this anymore.

I took my diet and training more seriously than I had ever had before and I made sure that this time, was going to be different…

This time I was actually going to do what I said I was going to do.

And this is me today…

If you are a skinny lad who wants to be strong, to get the respect of others, and finally have people come up to you, and ask you how you did it.

Take this from someone who was exactly where you were 2.5 years ago.

I know how hard us skinner lads have it when it comes to putting on weight.

We practically have to force ourselves to eat.

I've developed so many tips and tricks that I have used to help me put on 35kg over the last number of years without having to eat like a bodybuilder.
